Why regular eye exams matter more than you think
Most parents only book an eye exam when a child complains — yet children rarely complain. They assume everyone sees the way they do, so blurred board work or tired eyes after reading simply become normal to them. A full exam catches what report cards and school screenings miss, and it does so years before small issues become lasting ones.
At our Gulfport studio, a children's exam takes about an hour and feels more like play than a procedure. Below is what we check, what to watch for at home, and how often to come back.
What a full children's eye exam checks
School screenings test one thing: can your child read a chart at distance. A complete exam measures far more. We test each eye separately for sharpness, check how well the eyes team together, measure focusing stamina for close work, and examine the health of the retina and optic nerve with gentle imaging. We also screen for lazy eye and turned eyes, which respond best to treatment before age seven.
Signs your child may need glasses
Watch for everyday clues rather than waiting for complaints:
- Squinting at the board, the TV, or books held very close
- Frequent headaches, eye rubbing, or tired eyes after school
- Avoiding reading, losing their place, or slipping grades
- Tilting the head or closing one eye to see clearly
How often should children be tested?
We recommend a first full exam around age three, another before starting school, and then once a year through the school years. Vision changes fastest between ages six and fourteen, when even a six-month shift can turn a front-row child into a back-row struggler. Annual visits let us track that curve, update prescriptions on time, and start myopia control early when short-sightedness is progressing.
The bottom line is simple: an hour a year protects the sense your child uses for nearly all learning. If any of the signs above sound familiar — or if it has simply been a while — come in and let us take a proper look.
